Mistakes are a great tool for helping you to make money online. They represent the fact that you put yourself out there and tried something that you didn’t quite know how to do. There is, however, one deadly mistake that will prevent you from ever making any substantial money online, and it is not learning from your past experiences. This article discusses how and why to analyze your past experience to get the most out of them and increase your chances of future success.
The first step in learning from your mistakes is to review what you did. This can be done by reading over a log/journal that you created along the way or just by looking at your past projects and remembering the experiences. With your past projects in view, take a critical look at what worked and what didn’t. You may even want to write them down somewhere in a two column format.
Take a look at what you have accomplished, realize how far you have come, and be proud of it. This is a crucial step because it helps you to recognize what you have done correctly and build the confidence necessary to keep going. Did you create any new websites, write any new content, create any new PPC campaigns, learn any new techniques, or gain any new experiences? Even if you’re not where you want to be, you are still probably better off than you were just a couple months ago.
Next, analyze what didn’t work. Try to figure out why it didn’t work and how it could have been done differently. Decide which types of things are lost causes and which thing just need to be attacked from a different angle. This is a learning process that will really help you to set in stone the good techniques you have learned, form new ideas on your own, and avoid making the same mistakes over and over again.
When you take a step back to look at your past experiences, you are making a difference in your future. Instead of being scatter-brained, jumping from one new idea to the next and making the same old mistakes over and over, you are now adding to your knowledge pool. With your new knowledge, you can use better judgment to decide where to go next, you can help others out who have not had as many experiences to learn from, and you can form your own techniques based on those experiences.
Finally, another great benefit to analyzing your past mistakes is so that you can avoid every single roadblock, mishap, and pitfall that you encountered before. Instead of getting hung up on the same problems, and greatly reducing your progress, you can focus on tackling entirely new challenges.
What mistakes have you made in the past that turned out to be great learning experiences?

Not setting a sensible daily budget an Adwords account. Made that mistake once - will never make it again.

Jocko - I have done that a few times, but finally learned from it and, like you said, will never make that mistake again

A few years ago I learned some good ways to waste time promoting a website. One example is startpage exchanges. They seemed to be pretty popular for a while.

This one is a no brainer
However if you’re talking about addiction, then it’s tough.
Off topic: Hey Derek, I notice you look drunk in your picture!

WarriorBlog - while it may be common sense to you, I am sure others have found it useful. This post actually got more StumbleUpon traffic than any other post I have written on this blog.
Other people might think that adding a poll to WordPress is a no brainer

Great Post Derek!
Warrior - it might seem to be a “no brainer” but this post is more about inspiration and that is good to project to your readers.
