Great post !
I knew it was a good idea when I bookmarked your blog ! ;-)

I'm thinking along your way but for the French market. This market is practically virgin compared to the US.
The mentality isn't quite alike, but it will come close one day or another. History has proven this trend already.
Better be there when it's time to milk the cow.

Thanks again for this great post, though.

Derek,

I couldn't agree more! I think the way to real success is to build your own products, and about something you're passionate about.

I certainly agree with not worrying about giving your most valuable information away for free. There is so much free information out there that people expect to find something of value immediately when they land on your website, and they will be reluctant to swap their contact details for another freebie until they trust you.

At the end of the day, people are not looking for information, they are looking to solve a problem. It is not the information that they will pay for, but a believable strategy that will help them to achieve their goals.

THAT is what people pay for... to have a trusted "uncle/auntie" figure that they can follow so that they no longer have to read all that free information that is out there that is causing them to chase their tail.

An excellent example of the power of giving great information out for free and building trust is Yaro Starak's website at http://www.entrepreneurs-journey.com

The Blogging Blueprint is excellent and practically preaches this! (I'm not an affiliate btw!)

I love the idea of affiliate marketing to learn the niche first. That's a great little addition to the strategy.

Best of luck with your new strategy, and thanks for such an insightful article.

I'm still struggling to find the topic I want to write about. I'd like it to be Adwords as it's my day job and I have a small agency helping businesses to use it profitable. I'm passionate about it... but I'm concerned that my first real niche and product will be in the Internet Marketing field!

The best part I saw was buying a brandable domain, some people don't use bookmarks so they need to remember your name, and a lot of people will google it so make sure you are on top of the page.

Derek, this is a great post. You might want to take a look at what Rae Hoffman had to say about affiliate marketing success: http://www.sugarrae.com/woulda-coulda-shoulda/

It seems very aligned with what you are talking about and the direction you are taking.

Hey Nick, like I mentioned, for this type of strategy, if you want to work on it yourself (opposed to outsourcing everything), it MUST be something you are very interested in.

I sat down to brainstorm different topics I am passionate about (meaning I spend time with them almost every day of my life anyways) and came up with a list of 7 or 8 that were marketable and not technology or business related.

I'm sure you've got some of your own. If you'd like me to give you an opinion on them, send me an email and I'll let you know what I think.

I think it sounds like a good plan. I have heard many "marketing guru's" talk about similar ideas in the past, the biggest thing I have trouble with is picking a niche. Any tips on this?

I have a local brick and mortar business that I market online, and that is my bread and butter. However, I also want to start to make some "passive income" or do some web-only stuff. Any ideas on how to find ideas? :)
