How To Become An Idea Magnet
Personal Development September 4th, 2007Are you the kind of person that has tons of amazing ideas? Or are you the kind of person that sits there trying to think of that one great idea that will make you rich? Many times, the difference between those who come up with great ideas and those who don’t is nothing more than how they think of themselves.
A while ago, I wrote an article about actively searching for ideas. In this current article, instead of actively looking for ideas, I will show you how to let the ideas come to you.
For some people, ideas come naturally, all the time; for others, it isn’t so easy. If you have trouble getting great ideas (whether it be for writing, designing, marketing, or whatever), you might just need to change how you think about ideas.
How to Get Ideas
A few years ago, I read a great book titled “How to Get Ideas” by Jack Foster. One of the first chapters in the book talks about how, just as it can seem that some people are accident prone, it can also seem that other people are “idea prone”. The key to mastering the art of getting ideas is to simply make yourself idea prone.
How do you become an idea prone person? By knowing that ideas are out there and believing that you can find them.
Trying to come up with the very best layout, the very best headline, or the very best niche can be a daunting task. It can be so difficult that it may cause you to not take any action (the worst possible outcome). Instead of trying to think of the “very best” idea, realize that such an idea probably doesn’t exist. There are thousands of excellent ideas waiting for you, all you need to do is find a few of them.
Once you realize that, you will begin to see ideas everywhere. Many of them, if executed properly, can be just as good as any idea.
Keep in mind that you are presented with hundreds of great ideas each and every day, and don’t doubt your ability to notice them. Believe that you are great at finding ideas and you will be.
Ideas can come from any source of inspiration and at any time, so always be prepared. If you train yourself to just find a few of the hundreds of great ideas that present themselves to you every day, you will have more than you can handle… you will be the kind of person described in the first few words of this post.

What people don’t understand is that in business, you might go through dozens of businesses or IDEAS before you hit paydirt. Not all ideas are winners; if an idea doesn’t work out, pick yourself up and go on to the next one. A buddy of mine from college went through 12 different businesses (and I mean real tens of thousands of dollars spent) before he finally hit it big. Last I hear, he had his own show barn, horse stable, and had shows/auctions atleast once per week. He gets a cut of all events in his show barn.

I know what you mean Desty. It can be really frustrating to spend time and money on an idea, only to see it fail. I’m glad to hear that your buddy finally found a winner and his determination is paying off.

In some cases, getting too many ideas can be the problem. You just have so many ideas popping into your head that you can’t concentrate on one of them long enough to get anywhere with it.
The non-”idea prone” people don’t realize how good they have it

I’ll second what Desty said. In order find the golden idea it’s often necessary to go through dozens of bad ones. The key is to recognize why each idea fails and learn from it. It’s the knowledge and experience you gain from failed ideas that will allow you to turn an average idea into a great one.
