Getting to Know You with Help From WP-Polls
Scattered Thoughts September 8th, 2007If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
Important: If you don’t feel like reading this post, at least scroll down to the bottom and vote in the poll. Your feedback is very important to me.
Since the day I published my first article on DerekBeau.com, I have been writing with the intent to help people improve their “make money online” skills. To achieve this, most of what I have written has been based on the premise that you’re already pretty established in your internet business ventures. The problem with this is that I don’t know that that is the truth. I don’t know how much money you make, how much technical knowledge you have, what areas you are experienced in, and what areas you need help in.
Today I was faced with the dilemma of not really knowing what you want to read about. I actually wrote two full drafts and ended up deleting them because I didn’t think they suited this blog well enough. So, instead of writing a motivational post or a how-to guide today, I would just like to get to know you better.
Finding a Plugin
To accomplish this task, I did a Google search for a Wordpress poll plugin. Initially, I was going to use “Democracy AJAX Poll,” but then I found out that it did not support multi-choice polls. I also learned, from reading comments, that the latest version (which was released in September 2006) actually contains a fair amount of bugs. A second search for another plugin led me to “WP-Polls.”
I like WP-Polls a lot because it adds an entirely new “Polls” tab to your Wordpress admin area and has a ton of easy to configure options. Of course, it also supports multi-choice polls, which is a main feature I was looking for.
Creating the Poll
Anyways, I created a quick poll with one question and seven choices. Please take the time to vote so that I can get to know you better and write articles that suit your needs. Feel free to choose as many options as you like… I am really looking to find what I should not be writing about.
I think polls are a great way to connect with all of your readers that, for one reason or another, do not comment. Even though they do not comment, they are still very important to the blog. Because of this, I think I will be doing a new poll on a regular basis… maybe monthly.

Anand - Yeah, I have already gotten some great feedback from it. I now know that the most popular topic is affiliate marketing, but that at least some people are interested in everything on that list. I am very happy with the results because I can write about more beginner things in addition to advanced things and be confident that I am at least helping a percentage of my readers.
WarriorBlog - Great! I added those details to at least give some sort of helpful advice in this post. I’m glad that it helped you out.

Been following for a while, first time commenting.
I think there’s a definite void of quality, cohesive info for beginners out there. I’m a whiz at programming, web dev, etc, and I’ve found lots of advanced info out there on internet marketing that will no doubt be a great help once I get some traction. But I’ve found myself completely in the dark taking the first steps - things like just signing up on affiliate networks. Do I need to have a site or blog before signing up if I just want to do PPC initially? If so, how old does it need to be before I sign up? What do I expect once I’ve signed up?
A step-by-step series that goes through prep work, signing up for affiliate networks, choosing niche/products, building the landing site, setting up the AdWords campaign, tracking stats… I think that kind of thing could be hugely popular (and probably get a decent number of people to sign up for the various services through your affiliate link as well).
