I don’t know about you, but sometime I get stuck trying to figure out what to write about next. It isn’t that I have a shortage of ideas (I actually have over 100 of them for this blog alone), I just can’t decide which ones to choose. It also isn’t writing the post that is the problem, it’s getting started and making the 1 to 2 hour commitment required for creating a quality post. This article discusses some ways you can overcome this problem, including being too critical of your ideas, trying to appeal to everyone, and continually increasing your expectations.

Being Too Critical

You have an idea, but you don’t think it’s good enough. Being too critical and over-analyzing your writing will undoubtedly prevent you from creating anything good on a consistent basis. Sure you will have a really great idea every once in a while, but can you come up with them on a daily basis?

Many times, if you throw these negative thoughts out the window and just start writing, you will surprise yourself at what you have created. There are plenty of articles I have written for this blog that I questioned whether or not they would be good enough. After publishing them, however, they were actually well received.

Appealing To Everyone

This is a bit of a cliché, but it’s extremely true: If you make an attempt to please everyone, you will end up pleasing no one. It is impossible for you to write content that everyone loves. There will always be someone out there who it doesn’t apply to or who already knew what you said. Don’t worry about it.

My take on this is that as long as the article helps one person, it was worth the effort. However, it’s pretty safe to say that if one person has a question, is having trouble with an issue, or needs help on something, then there are other people in the same boat. Remember this when you are trying to decide if you should write a particular article or not. Ask yourself “is this topic within my niche and is there at least one person that could benefit from it.”

Continually Raising The Bar

Talk about pressure. If you continually strive to outdo yourself, or to maintain a super-human level of quality, you’ll probably end up feeling burnt out. Of course you need to produce content that is of the highest quality, but why not give yourself a break and be satisfied with posts that are simply “good”?

The best way to handle this is to find a balance between your best content, your good content, and even your miscellaneous or news-ish content. Instead of setting your expectations too high by continually releasing one difficult [to write] article after another, and then letting down your readers with a “so-so” article, mix them up.

You will find that even when you are varying your content quality, you are likely to have a higher frequency of quality content that the top blogs in your niche. Many of them stray off topic or are purely news based. Do you think it would be possible for some of these guys to post 10 top-notch articles per day?

Writing About Recent Experiences

This, in my opinion, is the fastest way to create great content. Take a recent experience you have had and find some way to apply it to your niche. This type of writing requires almost no research, is fun to produce, let’s your readers get to know you better, and can sometimes be more valuable than preplanned topics.

Unless you sleep all the time, you probably have tens or hundreds of unique experiences each day. Inspiration for posts can come when working, watching television, cooking/eating, conversing with friends, driving, or any number of other things.

Don’t Get Hung Up On What To Write

In case you haven’t guessed, this article was inspired by my own recent experiences. I often find myself with hundreds of writing possibilities, yet I struggle to choose one. There are just some of the things that I tell myself and focus on when that happens.

If you occasionally face this same problems, try these tips out for yourself. The worst thing you can do is let yourself become mentally paralyzed and not write about anything.
