DerekBeau.com Gets A Custom Designed Theme
Scattered Thoughts September 19th, 2007If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
I mentioned in a previous post that I was working on a new theme for DerekBeau.com. Well, if you are reading this post, then you have already seen the new design. What do you think?
Not Having A Unique Identity
The idea of having the exact same look as other blogs didn’t sit well with me. Every time I would visit a blog with that GlossyBlue theme, I would think I was at my own blog for a second. Not a good thing.
I had been actively looking for a designer, but couldn’t really find exactly what I wanted. I entertained about 11 design proposals through Elance and had an email correspondence with Nate Whitehill, but ultimately decided to do it myself. It is, after all, my “personal” blog.
The Design Process
I’ve been working on this for about three days now (not continuously though, I had some college courses to go to and normal work to do) and I finally got it to the point where it is good enough for public release. I will probably mess around with a few things over the coming days and weeks, but nothing major.
The inspiration for this design came from about 6-8 different templates on TemplateMonster (a great source for inspiration) as well as current blog design trends. I also purchased the Web 2 Mini Icons from N. Design Studio and took a lot of content layout elements from the previous theme.
I actually started out (and completed the design) with a brown/green/blue color scheme. During my coding and testing, however, I didn’t really enjoy using it. For some reason (I think it was the browns), it felt too closed in rather than open and airy. I decided to try a new color scheme (the current gray/red/teal) and fell in love with it.
Additional Notes
One thing to note about this new design is the banner ad in the header. It is really just there for aesthetic purposes (the header looks boring without it) but I wouldn’t be opposed to making money from it. I will probably rotate a few attractive banners for now and maybe run a contest in the future to give the spot away to one lucky reader
Another major change is the addition of a features header. It currently shows the top posts (ordered by number of comments left), latest posts (also available in footer), and subscription links. I want to replace the new posts area with something else because I feel that it is extremely redundant, but I just don’t know what else to put there.
Closing Comments
I think that’s about everything I wanted to say about the new look. I would really like to get your feedback on it, and I hope you like it because I don’t plan on changing it for a while. I might mix up the color scheme if I get tired of this one, but I would rather concentrate on writing new content than creating new themes.
So tell me, what do you think?

Looks great Derek. Pretty much how I would’ve done it, except I would’ve made it wider and with two sidebars on the right.
But, it looks great!

Nice! I like it!
Simple and clean. Would look great with a custom logo.

great new look Derek!

I would add the comments link at the bottom of the post. the last line in your thread sold me to check out what other’s thought of the new design…. “ops, where the comments link? ah, it’s at the top”
Just a thought!
Great design by the way!

Derek,
I really like your new theme. I know that you did not end up using the designs from elance, but could you explain how you solicited proposals? I was thinking about doing the same, but did not know how to structure my request so that I would get something useful to look at.

What I planned to say has been already said! Keep up the good work. You should release a varient of this theme to the public and get some good backlinks…or maybe sell a few copies of a variant of this theme and make some moolah

Derek, the new theme looks great.
Just a little feedback.
The top posts and new posts links text is a little small and difficult to read and the position does not really add to the stickyness. I’m here to read the post I came from my feed reader. i would like to read your other posts or be suggested other posts AFTER I read what I came here for.

Wow. Thanks for the great response!
Alexandru - I wanted to keep it thin so that it would be readable on smaller screens and to keep the content as the main focus.
CashQuests - I completely agree. I should go get myself a logo from the SitePoint Marketplace sometime soon.
Nate - Thanks! You’re large header and footer style definately had an influence on the layout here. It just works so well for a blog.
Chris - Good suggestion. I will take your advice and do that for the posts on the home page.
Fred - I basically just stated in my project description that I required a “hand-picked” example of their work that was similar to my project. If they were not able to provide this (usually because they didn’t read) I simply declined their bid. I also mentioned that creating a quick mock design could make my decision easier.
WarriorBlog - I had a feeling you would be the one to say something like that.
Anand - I wouldn’t sell templates and I don’t think I would do freelance work either. I took too many elements from the original GlossyBlue theme to profit from this one. I have been thinking of creating a free theme sometime in the future though.
Dave - There is a related posts section after each post and before the comments. This current header is actually smaller than the previous one, so I don’t really see how it can distract you
As for the text being too small, I agree, but it was the only way I could cram that information in there.

Great Job Derek. I like it very much.

Great Job! I agree with CashQuests though, you need a logo.

Thanks for posting, I was looking for the same guy who did you blog, time for my blog to go for a little makeover.
September 23rd, 2007 at 9:33 pm
Samuel - what do you mean? I did this design myself
September 23rd, 2007 at 9:47 pm
looks like someone already wants your services
Samuel seems to want to become your first client

Derek, are you kidding? I kept thinking that Nate did your blog design for you! Haha, I must be reading t0o fast that I misread something!
I know that Nate did the design for ShoeMoney & JohnChow. When I looked at his prices, I could not bear to pay $500+ for a makeover! Haha.
Guess, I will just hire my usual design guy to update my header banner & the borders.
Sorry, Derek, I did not know that you can even do blog design! Multi-talented guy indeed.

The perfect proof that most people do not read whole posts, but rather skim thru the lines

September 24th, 2007 at 6:07 am
Haha, that’s enough Anand! I’ll pretend not to feel embarassed
Now everyone knows that I’m a “speed reader” a.k.a skimmer.
September 24th, 2007 at 10:11 pm
lol, not my intention to embarrass you Samuel, I was just pointing out a really really common factor in how most people including me read online. I am sorry if I hurt you in anyway! On the other hand, this should remind all bloggers about the use of bold, italics and stuff to catch reader attention within the post. Just a tip out of the blue
September 24th, 2007 at 10:20 pm
LOL, hey Anand, I know you have no ill intentions towards me, just kidding around. Yes, good tip there, also we should also have paragraphs with about 4 - 5 line, any more lines makes it harder to read.

I really like the new look of the blog, a major improvement from your previous skin. If you are taking orders, I’d be interested in ordering a skin from you since UBD is too expensive.

I think you need to come back for one more post - how could you be going so strong and then “poof”? Hope all is well w/ you.
